Training Tip of the Week: It's OK to Walk
by Jennifer Kimble, Run On! Class Coordinator

Subscribe to BriefingI know that in the busy world that we live in, sometimes it’s hard to take time for yourself, but this fall, I challenge you to take that first step, and want you to know it’s okay to walk!

Walking can help you

  • Lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (the "bad" cholesterol)
  • Raise high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (the "good" cholesterol)
  • Lower your blood pressure
  • Reduce your risk of or manage type 2 diabetes
  • Manage your weight
  • Improve your mood
  • Stay strong and fit

As with any exercise program, be sure to increase speed and distance gradually. Wear good, flexible, walking shoes with a low heel, and be sure to stretch your calves and shins after you walk to prevent shin pain, a common problem for new walkers.

The fall is a great time for you and your family to visit some of the trails that the DFW area has to offer. The North Texas Trail runner’s website (www.nttr.org) has a listing of several area trails that you may not even know exist!
So get out and enjoy the weather. Your heart will thank you.
